FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW NATURE CONSERVANCY LAUNCHES

Beaver Island Conservancy is raising funds and forming partnerships to protect and preserve the island

Beaver Island, MI — Beaver Island Conservancy began its mission to protect land, air and water, with a project to preserve a stretch of majestic Lake Michigan shoreline. Beaver Island, the largest island in Michigan, contains delicate natural features that provide important habitat for migratory birds and endangered species.

“We are currently seeking donations for the permanent protection of more than a third mile of wild beach and 21 acres of forested wetlands. Preserving this area will provide pristine water and shoreline habitat for generations of wildlife,” says Beaver Island Conservancy president, Heather Johnson. “Regional land trusts cannot always spare the resources necessary to tackle every project, so we formed this organization to supplement their efforts, as well as to initiate our own to restore and preserve the environment. No single organization or individual can do it alone, protecting the island we love takes a community effort.”

When a piece of land crucial to the success of the first project came up for sale, several organizations came together to assist the new conservancy. The nation’s top environmental nonprofit, The Conservation Fund, provided a $240,000 loan to secure the land until funds can be raised. Local business, Ed Wojan Realty, was a contributor to the project. Little Traverse Conservancy, the regional land trust, will manage approved conservation easements for permanent protection of the project area. Until the loan is satisfied, Michigan Environmental Council will hold title to the newly acquired land and is assuming fiduciary responsibilities such as overseeing use of funds and ensuring donors' contributions to Beaver Island Conservancy are tax-deductible.

“I look forward to working with the community to preserve our island. Development has threatened the area,” says Johnson, “but if we act now, the innocence of the land as it is at this moment, untouched and unspoiled, is the way we can keep it forever.”

Founder's Message

Originally from Indiana, my family has been in love with northern Michigan since 1984, when I first attended Interlochen National Music Camp. After I finished college on the east coast, I returned with my husband to live, ski, and kayak on Good Harbor Bay. My parents moved to Lake Ann and my sister and her family now live in Traverse City. In 2018, we all decided to look at a house for sale on Beaver Island. Our love of Michigan grew exponentially the second we stepped from the little airplane onto the island tarmac. I knew I wanted to be part of the community and become a good steward of the land and water in this special place.

I started by doing conservation work in our corner of the island: saving a few land parcels from development, battling invasive plant species on our property, reaching out to my neighbors about the benefits of Conservation Easements as tools for the permanent protection of land, applying for CEs on our own property, performing small site restorations...and then I was presented with the chance to connect and permanently protect almost a third of a mile of Lake Michigan Shoreline.

As the one advocating for the future of this stretch of wild beach, I was charged with the task of fundraising and getting the word out. Wanting to partner with existing local and regional conservation entities, and becoming aware of even greater land protection and habitat restoration opportunities, I decided to create a platform for community efforts to save and protect the island. With Partnership in mind, Beaver Island Conservancy will support and initiate conservation efforts on Beaver lsland and the surrounding islands that make up the Beaver Island archipelago.

The innocence of the land as it is at this moment, untouched and unspoiled, is the way we can keep it forever, if we act now. I look forward to working with you to protect our island.

--Heather Johnson

A quote from the Founder of Beaver Island Conservancy:

"The nice thing about the size and promise of Beaver Island is that even one person can make a difference...just imagine what an entire community can do."

                                                     -- Heather Johnson
